Michelle Marquez

Michelle Marquez is a 15 year old Sophmore at the Math & Science Clover Hill High School located in Midlothian, Virginia. At 11, Michelle developed a passion for examining human perceptions of art using scientific correlation, discovering the mathematical structure of sounds that triggers selective emotions. Michelle was able to prove how the certain types of music affected parts of the brain and found the responses were universal across cultures and may have an evolutionary and biological basis. Michelle's research provides a fundamental understanding an a mechanisms of action of how music therapy works in treating symptoms of mood disorders (clinical depression and bipolar disorders), neurological disorders (schizophrenia, amnesia, Alzheimer's, etc.), and anxiety disorders (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder). Michelle has placed first in science competitions such as the Metro Richmond STEM Fair, the Junior Science and Humatinties Symposiun and First Place & Best in Behaivoral Science Category at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, CA. A collaboration between MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory and the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research program named a newly discovered a minor planet/asteroid after Michelle for her science contributions. Recently she was interviewd by Dr. Sanjay Gupta in CNN in the program "Vital Signs". She is the founder of a Out-of-the-Box initiative that explore and promote a trans-discilinary blend of Arts and STEM field looking for a place "Where Science Meets the Arts".
